Finding Ways To Cope in This Crazy World- Look For Beauty

Lately, it is really hard to ignore the state of our crazy world. Politics, shootings, terrorisms, natural disasters and so much hate amongst what we think should be our friends and neighbors. Just when you think it can not get any crazier, we wake up to something else.

It is easy to allow ourselves to become negative and dark and only seeing the ugliness. We just can not allow that to happen. So what do we do?

For some people, the state of the world makes them want to spread light and goodness. Some want to become activists for a cause…be it gun control, women’s rights or global warming. Some pray. Some decide to volunteer to make a difference somewhere in their community.

I do not seem to have the urge to do any of that. My introvert personality tends to just want to hide out. Crawl under a rock and ignore the world. While I do that, it seems that I want to be creative. I know…. such a weird response to a world I should be trying to make better. But for me, hiding out in my sewing room and making and creating is kind of my way of dealing with all that is going on in the world. Taking nothing… except a pile of fabrics and trim and bits of leather. Maybe an old piece of clothing or upolstory . Then turning it into something I am proud of really seems to do a soul good. I volunteer some of my time sewing little angel dresses. Gowns for innocent little angels who gain their wings way to soon. This small thing will certainly never solve the worlds problems on a grand scale, but maybe it helps one family, for one day, in just  a small way.

Sometimes I like to go out and take pictures of the beauty I see just outside my own front door, reminding me to be grateful and world events are just a small part of the big, really fantastic picture.

None of this takes away from the ugliness of the crazy world events, but it is just one way that I stay sane in the midst of it all.

What about you? Do you find yourself needing a break from the crazy world sometimes? I feel everyone needs some sort of outlet and I encourage everyone to find theirs. Maybe like me, you find you need to be creative. Maybe you need to be surrounded by other people. Maybe you spend time with animals or nature.  Or maybe you need to be more proactive getting more involved in activism or volunteering trying to make a difference.

Whatever you do, make sure that it makes you happy on the inside. Make sure you are feeling energized and happy doing it and that it really fills you up instead of draining you further. I really suppose this should just be how you live life all the time, and not just a way you cope with crazy world events.

As we see on the news daily, life can be short and we are never guaranteed tomorrow. Right now the world needs all the positivity and happy, healthy people that it can get. Make sure you are one of them!

  1. Loved this post! I’m doing a lot more knitting these days. I call it “self-medicating,” but it serves the same purpose you write about here. I’ve also discovered “water walking,” which is a way to get moving without actually swimming. It’s a very peaceful feeling and I’m loving it. Yes, being creative, looking for beauty…it’s all good. Also: looking into the face of my newest grandson. Nothing more beautiful than that. Thanks for the inspiration!

  2. This is so spot-on and needed today. I’ve been trying to find, each day, one thing to take pleasure in, even if it’s just an observation. Some days I succeed better than others.
